Introduction to Concrete Additives (3)

The concrete additive is a material that can improve the properties of the concrete mixture or hardened concrete by adding not more than 5% of the weight of cement in the process of mixing concrete (except for special circumstances).

Using concrete additives is one of the most effective ways to improve concrete strength, improve performance and save cement and energy. 

There are various types of concrete additives. In the last article Introduction to Concrete Additives (2), we talked about set retarders, air-entraining agents, and accelerating agents. In this article, pumping agents, water-proofing additives, and anti-freezing agents are going to be talked about.

Pumping agent, or concrete pumping agent:

It is a kind of additive which can improve the pumping performance of concrete, and has an excellent effect of reducing water and enhancing the effect of retarding and maintaining plastic. Pumping performance refers to the performance that the concrete mixture can run smoothly through the pipeline without blocking and segregation, and has good viscoplastic performance. Pumping agents can be divided into non-entrained dosage form (the main group is divided into calcium lignosulfonate, high-efficient water reducer, etc.) and entrained dosage form (the main group is divided into water reducer, air-entraining agent, etc.). Pumping agents can also be divided into liquid pumping agents and solid pumping agents.

It is suitable for the preparation of pumping concrete, commercial concrete, mass concrete, large flow concrete, summer construction, sliding form construction, large formwork construction, and other occasions. Using pumping agents can improve the workability of concrete mixture, reduce the performance of bleeding and segregation, increase the consistency, save cement, improve the compressive resistance, flexure resistance, tensile strength, and delay the hydration heating rate, avoid cracking, make concrete denser, and improve impermeability and durability.

Water-proofing additive:

The cement water-proofing agent is a kind of chemical additive. Adding water-proofing agents in cement, when cement condenses harden, subsequently volume expands, has the action that compensates contraction and tensioning steel bar to produce prestress and fill cement gap adequately. It can be used for basement, toilet, reservoir, purification pool, tunnel and roof, roof, ground, wall, and other waterproof engineering projects.

Anti-freezing agent:

The anti-freezing agent is a kind of additive that can make concrete harden under negative temperature and achieve expected performance and enough antifreeze strength under specified curing conditions. In other words, it is a substance that prevents water from freezing in materials at low temperatures. It can be used with water reducers and air-entraining agents together to achieve better results.
